Canadian teacher ordered to take anger management classes

Anger is a universal emotion, and there are few people who can keep their cool 100 percent of the time. However, there is a substantial difference between the occasional outburst and a full-blown anger management problem. In certain settings, it is simply unacceptable to allow your negative emotions to dictate your behavior.

In an extreme example of this, one Secondary School teacher from Mississauga, Ontario,Ā was recently reprimanded for mistreating his 6th and 7th grade students. According to the Web-based regional news outletĀ Mississauga.com, Thomas Foster admitted to abusing his students verbally and physically during his time as a teacher for the Toronto District School Board. As well as calling one student a “moron,” Foster pled no contest to charges that he had dragged students out of the classroom by their feet and held them upside down. In addition, his rage also led him to destroy a small pool table in front of a classroom of students.

The charges against Foster date back to 2003, but the source states that an official complaint was not filed with Ontario College of Teachers until four years later.

Foster’s teaching license has been suspended, and he will not be able to work again in the Ontario school system unless he completes a series ofĀ anger management classes.

Teaching can be incredibly stressful, and if you work in this field you have undoubtedly had moments when you weren’t sure you could maintain your composure and regain control of your classroom. But, why wait for an official reprimand to get the help you need?
