Young adult opens up to Dear Abby about anger management issues

In many cases, people who suffer from anger management issues know that something is wrong well before the problem becomes apparent to their peers or addressed by a judge in court. One 21-year-old from Hernon, Virginia, recently reached out to the nationally syndicated advice column “Dear Abby” for help with her anger. In a candid letter describing a specific struggle to keep this emotion in check, the writer expresses a sentiment that countless others have felt.

“I am 21 and I have an anger problem,” the writer, identified as “Consumed with Anger,” explains. “Sometimes when my friends, roommates or my boyfriend do something that annoys me, I feel so mad that I can’t concentrate on anything I have to get done.”

The writer goes on to explain that they are have resorted to violence in the past to relieve their rage – in the form of punching a wall.

“Is it normal to get this mad? How can I control my anger better?,” they ask.

This question is one that many people with anger management issues have undoubtedly asked themselves countless times. After all, isn’t anger supposed to be somewhat uncontrollable? However, if you find yourself routinely losing control at the slightest provocation, it may indicate that you need better tools to harness this emotion and keep it from affecting your daily life.

While “Consumed by Anger” had the courage and self-awareness to ask for help when they needed it, not every teen – or adult, for that matter – who struggles with rage may be as forthcoming. They may not even know who they can turn to for guidance. Our online teen anger management courses have been specifically developed to help young adults identify their emotional issues and approach difficult circumstances in more rational ways.
