Could anger management classes be the answer to workplace bullying?

While bullying is often associated with the hallways of a high school or the playground at recess, this issue is as great a problem for adults as it is for kids and teens. In fact, according to a recent report from The Associated Press, workplace bullying is poised to become “the next major battleground in employment law.”

In previous posts, we’ve reviewed a few professional settings where high pressure and hot tempers can collide, resulting in outbursts thatĀ couldĀ potentially harm employees, patients, clients and careers. In response to increased complaints of verbal and physical abuse in the workplace, theĀ sourceĀ reports that many industries have begun to incorporate anti-bullying measures that could range from suspension to mandatory anger management courses.

In addition, various state legislators are reportedly working toward expanding the rights of victims to take their complaints beyond the workplace and pursue legal action against their aggressors. As federal law currently stands, it is difficult for an individual who is not in a protected group to seek help from legal officials if they are being mistreated at work.

“More than a dozen states have considered anti-bullying laws in the past year that would allow litigants to pursue lost wages, benefits and medical expenses and compel employers to prevent an ‘abusive work environment,'” the source states.
