Radio DJ goes public about anger management issues

While some individuals in the public eye have made a living by expressing heated and controversial views on the air – think Howard Stern, Rush Limbaugh and other big names in broadcasting – sometimes the very energy that attracts their audience can lead to unpleasant altercations in private. Recently, Tom Barnard – a prominent DJ in the Twin Cities –Ā opened up about his struggles with anger management and substance abuse during a live broadcast of his popular morning radio show.

According to theĀ Star Tribune, a local media outlet, Barnard told his listeners that he would be seeking treatment for his anger issues and addiction. Barnard reportedly began relying on wine and prescription medication to help him sleep, but this habit eventually escalated to abuse.

“I wouldn’t want to be in a situation where I either croak or I hurt someone really badly,” he said of his decision to get help.

As well as addressing his substance abuse, Barnard also explained that he hopes to finally learn to control his anger.

“I just don’t want to be angry anymore,” he candidly said in the broadcast last week, aĀ Minnesota NBC affiliate reports.

Though many initially believed that Barnard would be leaving his show to completeĀ anger management classesĀ and tackle his addiction, KQRS – the radio station that has been his home for more than 25 years – issued a statement saying that he would remain on the air throughout this process. How much the local legend chooses to divulge about his treatment during this time remains to be seen.
