In June 2012, 24-year-old Juan Levia of Provo, Utah, was arrested on charges of kidnapping and assaulting his then-ex-girlfriend, a Brigham Young University student. Local affiliate KSL News reports that\u00a0Levia had attacked and stripped the young woman<\/a>\u00a0after learning she had gone out with another man. In April of this year, he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, a second-degree felony. Although the charge carried a sentence of one to 15 years in prison, a 4th District Judge commuted Levia’s punishment to just six days in prison, followed by three years of probation, 204 days of GPS monitoring and court ordered\u00a0anger management classes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But, in a bizarre twist, Levia and the young woman he had dated revealed that they had married each other just days before the trial took place. Prosecutors instantly decried the revelation, partly because the marriage meant that\u00a0Levia had violated a no-contact order<\/a>\u00a0that mandated the two stay away from each other, but also claiming the wedding was just a ploy to enable a victim marital privilege that would keep his new wife from testifying against him in court.<\/p>\n

In yet another turn, though, Levia’s wife revealed at the trial that she was actually pregnant, surprising both the judge and prosecution, and contributing to Levia’s reduced sentence.<\/p>\n

“[The pregnancy revelation] seemed to turn the tide with the judge and that was new information to the state as well,” prosecutor Craig Johnson told KSL.<\/p>\n

Levia’s defense attorney maintains that the pair married for love and are working out their problems in counseling.<\/p>\n
